Horror and Humor
Is your heart feeling heavy?
Is your stomach tied in knots?
Are you feeling the weight of the world and all the atrocities and disgusting reports on human behavior?
There is an answer to this constant bombarding of negativity.
Humor.
Find the humor in life around you!
This morning a friend shared a video of her grandson giggling for the first time. Is there any better, more joyful sound in the Universe? (If you think so- what is it? Seek it out!)
It’s so easy to become bogged down in yuck, but it’s important not to stay there. Not only does it not feel good. It perpetuates more YUCK.
Somewhere around a thousand years ago – or maybe closer to 50 – Norman Cousins figured out that a patient could heal themselves with high doses of Vitamin C and laughter. He wrote a whole book about it, and he wasn’t wrong.
I’m not saying that everyone who has a disease can cure themselves with Vitamin C and funny movies – there are more variables than that. However, laughter, fresh air, and fresh produce definitely help bring a FRESH PERSPECTIVE.
Don’t Worry, Be Happy, Good Vibrations, Girls Just Want to Have Fun, and Walking on Sunshine are some songs that automatically lift your mood. They may even prompt a spontaneous dance party. I’m sure you have your own favorites. My recent jam is Beethoven’s 7th Symphony (movement 2). I can start out angry/sad/frustrated/confused and screaming at injustices and be turned around by the end...perhaps because I’m imagining myself starring as the main character in my own personal rom-com.
Speaking of rom-coms, or straight up comedies, perhaps it’s time to indulge in one? Also, I’m going to put a plug here for children’s shows. Creators know that parents need to be entertained too, so letting yourself become immersed in the sly humor of Frozen, or The Parent Trap, or Ice Age for example could be just the balm you need.
In my family, there’s nothing like playing a game to showcase everyone’s humor.
Telling stories about people getting in the wrong car or drinking someone else’s drink at a fast-food restaurant can make us laugh for hours.
Life on earth isn’t easy, but it’s also not supposed to be continually dire. It’s up to each of us to find things in each day that make us smile. In fact, getting someone else to laugh is a great way to bring more joy into your own life!
Joy Angels are hovering about, looking for work. Allow joy to seep into your life today, if only for a moment. You won’t be sorry you did!
